SON OF MAN: Part Two of three

How the title “Son of Man” signifies Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and why it’s important.

  • Jesus’ humanity is dependent on God: Matthew 26:38–45
  • Jesus’ participation with fallen humanity dependent on God was voluntary: Philippians 2:7,8
  • Jesus’ participation with us makes him able to sympathize with our weakness and suffering. Hebrews 4:15

Why is this important?

And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”” (Matthew 8:20, ESV)

  • God does not simply wonder what it’s like for you and I to suffer. He became you and I and suffered at the hands of us.
  • For the follower of Christ suffering is only temporary when God’s Kingdom comes suffering will be done away with for good.
  • Jesus followers should participate in the suffering of their community and world in active ways.

How the title “Son of Man” signifies Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and why it’s important.

  • Jesus, as The Son of Man, is the intercessor or mediator between God and man. 1 Timothy 2:5, Romans 8:34
    • Mediation: an attempt to effect a peaceful settlement between disputing nations through the friendly good offices of another power.
    • Mediator: a person who mediates especially between parties at variance.

Why is this important?

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”” (Matthew 9:6, Mark 2:8-12 ESV)

  • Jesus (alone) has the authority to forgive our sins. By his grace and though confident trusting reliance on Jesus The Son of Man. (Eph 2:8-10)
  • The Lords prayer says “forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those whose sin against us”. With that in mind Christians should be, above all things, forgivers.
