Sunday morning message. The SON OF MAN: Part four of a four part series 10/7/2012

“The Son of God became the Son of man that you who were sons of men might be made sons of God.” Augustine of Hippo

  • Son of Man signifies Christ’s total redemptive victory. John 3:14,Numbers 21:9
  • Son of Man signifies Christ’s total redemptive victory. Why is this important?
    • Salvation is made possible through Jesus’…
    1. Atoning death. There are different ways that the idea of atonement is portrayed in the NT. (The following is taken from The Book of Biblical Imagery)
      •  the bearing away of sins
      •  the financial image of a ransom that is paid in exchange for sinners
      • the substitute who takes the place of sinners, suffering the punishment that stems from God’s justice in their place
      •  the OT sacrifices and Christ as the fulfillment of those sacrifices are a satisfaction and an appeasement of the just anger of God against the human race for its offense.
      •  the atonement is a legal and juridical meeting of the requirements of the law so that sinful people can stand acquitted before God the judge
        • The result of all these transactions, finally, is reconciliation between an offended, holy God and a sinful, rebellious humanity (Rom 5:7–11; 2 Cor 5:18–20; Col 1:20).
    2. Resurrection. (Acts 7:56, Heb 7:25)
    3. Second Coming (Daniel 7:13, Mark 14:62)
  • Son of Man signifies Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth. He is Lord.
    • Mark 14:62, Matthew 28:18
    • ““Lord” in English is the rendering of the Hebrew adonai or of the Greek kurios. The Hebrew YHWH is usually rendered “Lord”; see Yahweh (YHWH). God’s rule and authority as Lord rests ultimately upon his creation and ownership of all things and people (Ps 24:1–2).” Elwell, Walter, Comfort, Philip
  • Son of Man signifies Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth. Why is this important.
    • Because confessing, believing and living with Jesus as Lord of our lives now brings glory to the Father by showing this world who the real boss is. Phil 2:9-11
  • Most of all Son of Man signifies the final judgment that Jesus Christ administers.
    • Matthew 13:41–42
    • Judg·ment (from dictionary.com)
      • The ability to judge, make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, especially in matters affecting action; good sense; discretion. Example: He was a man of sound judgment.
      • The demonstration or exercise of such ability or capacity. Example:  The major was decorated for the judgment he showed under fire.
      • The forming of an opinion, estimate, notion, or conclusion, as from circumstances presented to the mind. Example: Our judgment as to the cause of his failure must rest on the evidence.
      • The opinion formed. Example: He regretted his hasty judgment.
  • Most of all Son of Man signifies the final judgment that Jesus Christ administers. Why is this important?
    • “Christ qualifies as judge of all because he, through his incarnation (God became man), became one with all human beings and still retained his deity.”
    • Acts 17:30–31 (The Message) 30 “God overlooks it as long as you don’t know any better—but that time is past. The unknown is now known, and he’s calling for a radical life-change. 31 He has set a day when the entire human race will be judged and everything set right. And he has already appointed the judge, confirming him before everyone by raising him from the dead.”
